Wow!
We just finished up earlier tonight (well, now yesterday) hosting Craig Alexander, the current Ironman Triathlon World Champion at our San Diego sports medicine center. The Ironman Triathlon World Champion’s visit was part of the Triathlon Club of San Diego’s club meeting and the kick-off event for the Competitor Magazine’s Endurance Sports Awards weekend.
Over 300+ triathletes came to hear “Crowie” talk with Bob Babbitt of Competitor Magazine and John Duke of Triathlete Magazine. It was interesting to hear more about what many consider to be one of the hardest-working triathletes in the sport. It was also enlightening to hear how important his family is in his success.
My highlight?
While there were a lot to choose from, including a surprise appearance by 6-time Ironman World Champion Dave Scott, and a great interview by Bob and John with Craig Alexander; my highlight was the triathlon club’s presentation to club member Skip Gleavey – a true inspiration.
Skip was injured in a bike accident last year and is currently a paraplegic. Oh, and this was after battling a Stage 4 lymphoma diagnosis and a heart attack that should have killed him according to his doctors. Skip was the first recipient of a check from the Triathlon Club of San Diego to help with his medical expenses. His comments – that he gets up every morning and pushes himself because he doesn’t want to let other triathlon club members down. That’s a outstanding statement coming from someone who serves as a role model of persistence, inspiration and never-quitting.
If you don’t know Skip’s story – read about it here.
So now for a little rest before getting back down to the clinic to clean up in the morning!
