Dr. Martinez is a board-certified San Diego sports medicine doctor and family physician and has treated a wide-range of athletes from the high school and recreational athlete to the elite Olympian and professional.

San Diego Sports Medicine Doctor - John Martinez, M.D.
He is a team physician for the USA Triathlon age group teams competing at the Triathlon World Championships since 2004 and currently is one of four physicians providing medical care to the USA Triathlon elite triathletes racing on the ITU World Cup Triathlon circuit.
Dr. Martinez has been a member of the sports medicine staff at the Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon World Championship since 1999. He has also provided sports medicine coverage at the Redlands Classic road cycling race and the NORBA Mountain Bike National Championships at Mount Snow, Vermont.
Dr Martinez is the founder of TriathlonDoctor.com, a website that provides current information and podcasts about a wide range of sports medicine topics for triathletes and other endurance athletes.
He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York and obtained his medical degree from Albany Medical College. Dr. Martinez went on to complete his residency in family medicine at the St. Anthony Family Medicine Residency in Denver, Colorado, where he also served as a 4th year Chief Resident and junior faculty member. In 2002, he completed his Primary Care Sports Medicine fellowship through Kaiser Permanente in Southern California. After graduation, he entered a family medicine group practice in Escondido, California before starting Coastal Sports and Wellness Medical Center in 2007.
Dr Martinez somehow has also managed to find time to be a triathlete, cyclist, and runner, completing 4 Ironman triathlons, including the Hawaiian Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii.
